:)Īnd as I mentioned earlier, others can add stuff too. But most likely I'll gradually make more stuff for this in the future, and so it'll get better as time goes on.

Although of course some stuff is still missing, for example some better tilesets, more enemy types and maybe a few alternative "skins" for the hero. So, I think this is a good start for a nice run'n gun starter set. I didn't make any bullets or explosions though, but the good old ones should be 100% compatible:Īnd the "bullet collection 2" linked above of course has those 16-way blaster bullets, use them for the hero. Other things included in this kit are: A basic tileset for a simple test level (quite average, I'll make better tiles in the future), an enemy soldier (simple palette switch from the hero), some ground turrets and small enemies, a cool looking robot mech, some energy bars, a small game and level object set (lifts, doors etc), and the Open Gunner font set (with two different fonts: big and small). The most important thing here is the Hero character, which has 120+ frames of animation. In addition to normal stuff like running and jumping I also made animations for ground crawling, ladder climbing, for Megaman X style "speed dash" and "wall jump", and poses for Contra style 12-direction shooting, including both standing and running variations (12 shooting directions when standing, 8 when running). For this purpose I have also included a "style guide" amongst all the stuff found here. :)Īnd as you can see I named the set "Open Gunner", which basically means that other people too are welcome to expand this set if they want. The idea here was to combine the look and feel of the three best run'n gun games ever: Turrican, Megaman X and Contra, and see what would come out of it, and this is the end result. I have been planning to do this kind of set for a long time but haven't had time until now.it took me about 2 weeks to make this. As of this article's publication, Sega has not responded to Ars' questions about if or when fans might expect patches to Sonic Origins on any of its platforms. This is a complete and high quality "starter kit" for a "run'n gun" style platformer/shooter game. Stealth has not posted on Twitter since the late-June thread went live. "We weren't too thrilled about its pre-submission state, either, but a lot was beyond our control." The thread claims that requests to delay the game or submit major last-minute fixes were denied by Sega, though while Stealth clarifies that certain Sega staffers were great to work with, the thread doesn't single out the biggest sources of these grudges. "Every one of us is very unhappy about the state of Origins and even the Sonic 3 component," Stealth wrote in a lengthy Twitter thread. On Origins' launch day, Stealth warned that "wild bugs" could be found in the collection, for which he took some responsibility. Stealth is credited as a member of the Headcannon development team that is beloved in the Sonic community for its work on the series' widescreen ports to smartphones, along with its contributions to the critically acclaimed Sonic Mania.
#GUN FIGHT GAME SPRITES MOD#
Tuesday's mod project shutdown follows a troubling launch-day statement in June made by Stealth, a longtime Sonic game modder and programmer. These issues come on top of the general price-to-content ratio that I called out in my review of the Origins collection, which were exacerbated by a puzzling decision to lock certain aesthetic and "museum" content behind DLC paywalls.

" Sonic Origins is serviceable for newcomers, but for longtime fans like myself, it leaves a lot to be desired," they point out. In public tweets, XanmanP clarifies that the project "became more of a chore to fix than something fun," at which point the three-person modding team bounced to different modding projects "with much greater goals that were more fun to work on.") Stealth comes out of hidingĮxamples of significant Sonic Origins bugs, which were not addressed by the BetterOrigins mod before its GameBanana page was edited, include massive computational spikes on PC when the game is left in its "main menu" interface, full of 3D models of classic characters a bug in Sonic 2 that leaves the series' popular sidekick Tails endlessly jumping (and making repeated jumping noises that cannot be stopped) and wholly stuck outside the screen's field of view a video playback issue in the Switch version of Sonic CD and a bug that can erase progress in the collecting of "Chaos Emeralds" in select games.
#GUN FIGHT GAME SPRITES PATCH#
( Update, 7 pm ET: In an email to Ars Technica, XanmanP clarifies that curse words in the mod's patch notes were "hyperbole and borne out of frustration with limited modding options"-and that their frustration stemmed in part from Sega's choice to remove older versions of the included games from digital storefronts.
